EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
